The story begins with a group of friends rafting in the West Virginia wilderness, only to be brutally attacked by the series' signature cannibalistic mutants. Alex, the sole survivor, is later found by a group of prisoners being transported via bus through the same forest. When the bus is forced off the road by the cannibals, the survivors—including both the guards and the dangerous inmates—must navigate the woods to survive.
