Set in a luxurious brothel in Paris at the very end of the 19th century, the film is not the romanticized, corset-ripping drama you might expect. It is something far more haunting, clinical, and bizarrely beautiful.

The film references Jean-Martin Charcot’s studies on hysteria (the famous photographs of women in asylum poses). Bonello parallels the brothel with the asylum; both are institutions where male doctors/clients define female madness.
