Not all the pictures were bright. Amina photographed the clinic room where her father slept, his face more like a map of the places he had been than the person who once raced goats as a young man. She photographed the dry bed of the seasonal stream three years after the floods, the cracked mud like the skin of a sleeping animal. These images were harder to show; they made people hold their breath and count their coins. Still, they mattered.
