The Renault DF1070 was not the best engine of its era; it was the most important. By proving that a small, turbocharged engine could beat a larger naturally aspirated one, Renault rendered the DFV obsolete within three years. The engine directly inspired the subsequent BMW M12/13, Ferrari 126C, and the 1,400-horsepower qualifying monsters of the mid-1980s.
