Literature has been one of the primary mediums through which the Mandingo Massacre has been explored. Works of fiction and non-fiction alike have tackled the subject, often using it as a lens to examine the brutal realities of slavery and racism.
The Mandingo Massacre was a culmination of these resistances. In 1820, a group of enslaved Mandingo people, led by a man named Hamane, staged a revolt on a plantation in Alabama. The enslaved people, armed with makeshift weapons, attacked and killed several plantation owners and overseers. The revolt was eventually put down, but not before many enslaved people were killed or captured.
