Set years after Underworld: Evolution , the story begins with humans discovering the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans. A global "Purge" is launched to eradicate both species, during which Selene is captured and cryogenically frozen.

The movie takes place 12 years after the events of the first film. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman) are awakened from their cryogenic slumber and find that vampires and werewolves are at war. They team up with Eve (India Eisley), a hybrid human-vampire, to fight against the Lycans and the vampires.
