The Seattle user didn't speak Japanese, but they wanted the "vibe." As the opening cinematic played, the file did its job. It pushed the sound of a desperate plea through the speakers. For the first time since its creation, the Japanese VO wasn't just a string of code in a binary tomb—it was a voice, heard and felt, proving that even a "selective" file has a story worth telling.
There's also the possibility of the file having a hidden meaning or being part of a puzzle in a game. Perhaps the binary data contains encrypted information or a message in Japanese that the protagonist needs to decipher to progress in the story.
How does selective work in practice? The original Japanese game might have voices_full.bin (2.5 GB). The fg-selective-japanese-vo.bin might only be 800 MB. It contains the lines for the main protagonist and two heroines. The side characters remain muted or use English placeholders.
: During the "Select Components" phase of the installation, ensure the Japanese Language (or "Japanese Voiceovers") box is checked.
