Sinister tells the story of Ellison Hoover (Ethan Hawke), a writer of true-crime novels who, in an effort to inspire his next book and provide a change of scenery for his family, moves them into a remote, rural home. The house, with its sprawling grounds, seems like the perfect setting for Ellison to immerse himself in his work. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the house holds a dark and sinister secret. Ellison discovers a box of disturbing home movies that lead him on a journey to uncover the history of the house and the reason behind the gruesome murders that took place there.
