Upon release, Badri received mixed reviews. Critics praised the first half and the music but felt the second half became too melodramatic. While it ran for over 100 days in many centers, it wasn’t a "blockbuster" on the level of Friends (2001) or Shahjahan (2001). However, its satellite rights and television reruns have turned it into a family favorite over the years.

Making her Tamil debut opposite Vijay, Bhumika Chawla delivered a restrained yet powerful performance. Her chemistry with Vijay was fresh, and the song sequences became instant hits.
