Then came La Bamba (1987). Although the soundtrack is a covers project, Hernández’s role as Ritchie Valens is culturally pivotal. More importantly, the band’s own track for the film, "La Bamba" (the traditional son jarocho), features Hernández’s arrangement and harmony. However, the pressure of the spotlight led to the experimental La Pistola y el Corazón (1988), a stripped-down acoustic EP. Hernández is the spiritual director here, leading the band through "Estoy Sentado Aquí" and "El Canelo" with a purist’s rigor, reaffirming their roots before the mainstream could dilute them.
